Personal Trainers in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town - TYPES OF BELLY FAT AND HOW TO LOSE IT

Wondering how to lose belly fat? First know the difference between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat.

An unhealthy diet, stress and lack of exercise are reasons many of us gain belly fat. There are two primary types of belly fat: visceral fat and subcutaneous fat.

Visceral fat surrounds the organs, and subcutaneous fat sits under the skin.

What causes belly fat?

You’re more likely to gain belly fat when you have a sedentary lifestyle – like an office job, where you sit for long periods of time at a desk.

Belly fat is dangerous because it can increase your risk of heart disease, heart attack,  type 2 diabetes, stroke and high blood pressure.

How to lose belly fat

Good nutrition (including eating a diet of complex carbohydrates, poly-unsaturated fats, and lean protein) and exercise are essential to help lose belly fat. Your personal trainer will advise you to do high-intensity interval training. Spot exercising, such as doing sit-ups, can tighten abdominal muscles, but it won’t get at visceral fat. So, stick to HIIT!
